# Addition math stories

Something is added – how many are there now? The chickens lay eggs, pick strawberries and blow up balloons while your child adds within 20.

## What your child practises

- **Adding across ten:** 8 + 6 – first make 10, then add the rest.
- **Doubles:** 7 + 7 – two equal amounts together.
- **Making 10:** 7 + ? = 10 – how many are still missing?
- **Adding three numbers:** 6 + 5 + 4 – one step at a time.

## How do you spot an addition story?

Words such as "more", "join", "together" or "altogether" often show that something is being added. More important than single words is the picture in your head: does the amount get bigger? Then addition usually fits. Making 10 works the other way round: the target is already known and the missing part is the answer.

A helpful strategy for adding across ten: split the second number so the first one becomes exactly 10. For 8 + 6, that is 8 + 2 = 10 and then 4 more – so 14.
