# Division math stories

Twelve pears for three baskets, pancakes for two, five strawberries in each basket – your child shares, makes equal groups and divides without remainders.

## What your child practises

- **Sharing:** 12 pears are shared fairly among 3 baskets. How many go into each basket? 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
- **Grouping:** Papa Rooster carries 12 eggs, 3 at a time. How many trips does he make? Again 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
- **Halving:** 8 pancakes for two – each gets half.

## Sharing or grouping?

Both stories lead to the same division, but the question is different. When **sharing**, the number of groups is known and the question is how many go into each group. When **grouping**, the size of each group is known and the question is how many groups there will be. Children who have met both kinds of story understand division much more securely.

Division is closely linked to the times tables: if you know 3 × 4 = 12, you also know 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Sharing fairly and making equal groups – exact division linked to the times tables.
