# Tens and ones math stories

At the market, Mama Hen sells eggs in cartons of ten. Full cartons and single eggs show how numbers up to 100 are made of tens and ones.

## What your child practises

- **Grouping in tens:** ten eggs fit in one carton – a full carton is one ten.
- **Building numbers:** 3 full cartons and 4 single eggs make 30 + 4 = 34 eggs.
- **Reading numbers:** the first digit shows the tens, the second the ones.

## Why tens and ones matter

A child who understands that 34 is made of 3 tens and 4 ones can count large amounts faster, compare numbers confidently and later calculate more easily up to 100. Instead of counting 34 single eggs, you count three cartons and four eggs – quicker and less error-prone.

This is easy to act out at home with egg cartons, base-ten rods or bundles of straws.
