# Subtraction math stories

Something is taken away, eaten or pops – how many are left? Your child subtracts within 20 and compares two amounts.

## What your child practises

- **Subtracting across ten:** 12 − 7 – first go back to 10, then take away the rest.
- **Comparing:** How many more flowers does the chick have than Papa Rooster? The difference is a subtraction.
- **Two steps:** 10 − 4 + 5 – first something is taken away, then something is added.

## How do you spot a subtraction story?

When something is "taken away" or "eaten up", or a balloon "pops", the amount gets smaller, and the question usually asks how many are "left". Comparing is the second kind of subtraction: for "how many more?" you subtract the smaller number from the larger one.

In two-step stories it helps to pause after each step and say the result so far out loud. The video shows both steps one after the other.
