This is a practical starting point, not a rule. Spend about 2 minutes looking at one example together. Use 5 minutes for a few practice questions. Leave 3 minutes to finish with something your child can do confidently.
Ask: “What do you notice?” or “Can you show it another way?” For some addition questions, try “What happens if you start with the bigger number?” Give the child time to explain their thinking.
