Look at both complete groups

Count or group the objects on the left and right. Then decide whether the left group has fewer objects, the same number, or more objects.

If the left group has 8 objects and the right group has 11, the left is smaller. Choose the less-than sign because the comparison is read from left to right. Reverse the groups and the sign must change.

Compare before choosing

The shape of a group can change without changing its quantity. Use every object in each group, then choose the sign that describes the left group compared with the right group.

When two spreads look different, pair objects across the groups or count each side before choosing. A wider-looking group does not necessarily contain more objects.
