Subtraction finds the difference

When you subtract, you take one amount away from another to find what remains. In 13 − 5, 13 is the minuend, 5 is the subtrahend, and 8 is the difference.

To work it out, split 5 into 3 and 2. Take 3 away from 13 to reach 10, then take away the remaining 2. The result is 8.

Build confidence in small steps

Begin with familiar facts within 20, then move to tens and ones within 100 or hundreds within 1,000. Choose the range that fits your next step; each practice round builds gradually.

If a child loses track while counting back, pause at ten and ask how much still needs to be taken away. The focused round offers immediate feedback; the matching worksheet leaves room to record the steps.
