Count back for small steps
For 8 − 3, start at 8 and count back three steps: 7, 6, 5. Keeping track of each step helps you find the difference accurately.
Bridge through ten
For 13 − 5, split 5 into 3 and 2. First use 13 − 3 to reach 10, then subtract the remaining 2 to reach 8. Bridging through ten can turn a less familiar difference into two easier steps.
The ten-question round moves from subtraction within 10 to non-crossing facts within 20, then mixes in crossing-ten facts. If an answer is not right yet, keep it in view, adjust it, and try again.
