Add the tens, then the ones

For 34 + 25, add 30 + 20 = 50, then 4 + 5 = 9. Put the parts together to make 59. The tens and ones keep their places; 34 + 25 is not 3 + 4 + 2 + 5.

When the ones make another ten

For 38 + 27, add 8 + 7 = 15. That is one ten and five ones. Add the extra ten to 30 + 20 to reach 65. Check by estimating: a number near 40 plus one near 30 should be near 70, not 15.
