Keep each place in its column
For 324 + 251, add the hundreds (300 + 200), tens (20 + 50), and ones (4 + 1). The parts make 575. Writing the places in order prevents a tens digit from being treated as a ones digit.
Cross a hundred deliberately
For 278 + 145, start with 278 + 100 = 378, then add 40 to get 418 and 5 to get 423. The last steps move through 400; estimate 280 + 140 ≈ 420 before accepting an answer.
