Look at the whole collection
Notice every object before choosing. A row, a loose arrangement, and a structured group can all show the same quantity.
Two full groups of five with three more objects show 13, whether the extras sit beside the groups or below them. Match that collection with the numeral 13, not with a number suggested by its shape.
Connect the quantity to its numeral
Choose the number that tells how many objects are shown. Check once, then adjust your choice if the quantity and numeral do not match.
For a child who guesses from the arrangement, ask them to count the full groups first and then the extras. The focused activity lets them try the same question again after checking.
