What Is a Number Line? How to Fill Missing Numbers from 10 to 60

Read equal jumps of ten on a number line, fill missing labels, and check the order from 10 to 60.

A number line places numbers in order along a straight path. Moving right usually means the numbers get larger; moving left means they get smaller. Equal spaces must represent equal jumps, so the spacing helps us work out a missing label.

Number lines connect a spoken count to a position. Rather than memorising isolated labels, a child can see that 30 sits between 20 and 40 and that moving from 30 to 40 is the same-sized jump as moving from 40 to 50.

Count by tens from 10 to 60

Picture six equally spaced marks. The first is 10 and the last is 60. There are five jumps between them, so each jump is 10:

10 → 20 → 30 → 40 → 50 → 60

If the third label is covered, begin at 10 and take two jumps: 10, 20, 30. The missing number is 30. You can also work backwards from 60 to check.

For a practice version, cover 20, 30, 50 and 60 and leave 10 and 40 visible. Count forwards by tens to recover the hidden labels; then count backwards from 60 to test them. A child can point to each mark while saying the numbers aloud so that one spoken step matches one drawn step.

Look at the distance, not just the labels

Suppose a line shows 20, □, 40 at three equally spaced marks. The difference from 20 to 40 is 20 over two jumps, so each jump is 10. The middle label must be 30.

If the marks are not equally spaced, you cannot safely infer a constant step from the drawing alone. First check the given numbers and the spacing rule.

Why use a number line?

The line makes numerical order and distance visible. It supports counting on, counting back, skip-counting and finding numbers between two anchors. It also provides a bridge to later addition and subtraction: moving three equal jumps of 10 from 20 lands on 50, so 20 + 30 = 50. Moving one jump left from 50 gives 40, so 50 − 10 = 40.

Tips for similar activities

Start with a familiar scale and mark the endpoints. Ask how many spaces lie between them, not how many ticks: six ticks have five spaces. A finger can trace each jump. Once the tens sequence is comfortable, try steps of 5 or 1, or start at a different anchor. To practise counting backwards, begin at 60 and take equal jumps left: 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10. Check that the direction and step stay consistent.

Children can extend this idea to ones, fives or other regular steps. Number-line practice offers more short sequences with a visible scale.
