Multiplication math stories

Three plates with four cookies each, three rows of muffins, five full egg cartons – your child spots equal groups and solves times-table facts.

What your child practises

  • Equal groups: 3 plates with 4 cookies each make 3 × 4 = 12 cookies.
  • Arrays: 3 rows with 5 carrots each – the arrangement shows the multiplication.
  • Times 2, 5 and 10: anchor facts that help with other facts.
  • More facts: 3 × 6 or 3 × 7 – for example by building on a known fact.

How do you spot a multiplication story?

Look for words such as “each” or “every”: every plate has the same number of cookies. The first number tells you how many groups there are, the second how many are in each group. If your child is unsure, counting on group by group is fine: 4, 8, 12. Over time this turns into a multiplication fact.

Grades are a guide: times tables usually start in grade 2 and are practised further in grade 3.
