Long Division Worksheet
Two A4 pages: long division by one-digit numbers on a grid, problems with remainders, checking with the inverse and an answer key.
What is on the worksheet?
A short example at the top shows the steps: work from the left, divide, multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit. Five tasks follow. First come two divisions with two-digit answers, then one with a three-digit answer that can have a zero in the middle. Task 3 does not come out even and ends with a remainder. In task 4 your child checks answers with multiplication, and task 5 has two word problems – in one of them the remainder decides the answer. A brain teaser and three large divisions with four-digit numbers finish page 1. Page 2 has every answer.
Each problem is set out on a grid in the long division layout used in US classrooms: the divisor outside the bracket, the quotient on top.
Who is it for?
Grade 4, when long division by one-digit numbers is introduced or reviewed. Children who know their times tables well will find it much easier.
How to use it
Do the first problem together and say every step out loud. Then let your child work alone and check each answer by multiplying.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Page 2 shows every quotient with its remainder and the answers to the word problems.
Can I get new problems?
Yes. “New numbers” opens the worksheet generator with the same topic and new numbers, as often as you like.
How do I print it correctly?
Choose portrait and 100% scale in the print dialog. The sheet is laid out for A4 paper; on US Letter, choose “Fit to page” so both pages print whole.
