The 4 in 46 means four tens, not four ones. Reading 46 as 40 + 6 makes larger addition and subtraction easier to explain. Before calculating quickly, ask which tens and ones are changing and whether a boundary such as 50 or 100 is crossed.
Two groups of five are ten objects altogether. The 2, 5 and 10 times tables give short ways to describe equal groups, but drawing or counting groups is still useful when a fact is unfamiliar.
